PANO – formerly known as NYC Women Filmmakers is a non-profit organization that helps empower and educate women and non-binary filmmakers. They were about to embark on a new direction planning a new, and ambitious, mini- mum viable product for their filmmakers and supporters. The goal was to articulate not only what the organization stands for but also which tactics would be used. The organization worked with their board to contribute ideas and shape the meaning, the intent and feeling behind the statement.
I volunteer on the board and was excited to see this unfold. Several people collectively created the statement, with each person weighing in. The result is a testament to the collaborative spirit in the group and clarity of vision.
The resulting mission statement: We champion inclusion in Film, TV, and Media by connecting under-represented creators with influential networks and valuable resources to impact meaningful change in the industry. This type of work is that of discovery, and you may be doing this solo. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t ask friends, colleagues, and peers for their opinions, feedback, and reflection. The process of understanding what makes you unique and your mission may take time. No worries! Create something with the understanding that they be updated at any time.
